Lady Cannoneers Start Off Their Season 1-1 in Baltimore, MD.

Friday Night:

On Friday night the Jefferson women's basketball program tipped off their 2018-19 season in Baltimore, Maryland against Baltimore City Community College. A daunting opening game for the Lady Cannoneers saw Baltimore City jump out to an early 8-1 lead. Back to back 3 point field goals from Katelyn Flanagan closed the lead to 8-7 as the first quarter wound down. Baltimore closed the quarter on a 11-2 run to cap the quarter at 19-9. The lady Cannoneers settled in on the defensive end and trailed at halftime 32-18. Baltimore City's height and athletic ability was the determining factor in this one as the third quarter was much of the same story seeing the Lady Cannoneers trail 50-21 after 3 quarters. Ending on a high note the Lady Cannoneers score 14 fourth quarter points and drew even for the quarter. Final score saw Baltimore City win 64-35. Freshman guard Katelyn Flanagan led the Lady Cannoneers in scoring with 9 points, Sierra Fleming, and Chelsey Raven chipped in 6 a piece. A great test against a very accomplished women's basketball program saw Jefferson gain a lot of knowledge and confidence moving forward. Coach Woodward was pleased with the level of competitiveness his team had in their first contest. " I thought we played really hard. We battled on the glass, played together, and aggressive defensively. Their physical stature, and athleticism was a bit much for us to overcome. This was a great learning experience for our program moving forward. They are on heck of a ball club"

Saturday Afternoon:

Saturday afternoon saw a different story for the Lady Cannoneers behind an energetic start on both ends of the floor. Jefferson jumped out to a 20-3 first quarter lead led by their defensive effort, and transition offense. Prince George fought back in the second to win the quarter 13-12 headed into a 32-16 lead for the Lady Cannoneers at the half time break. The start of the third quarter saw Jefferson and Prince George trade field goals and free throws early behind two quick field goals from sophomore guard Sierra Fleming. The Lady Cannoneers went on to hold Prince George without another field goal for the next eight minutes, jumping out to a 53-25 lead after 3 quarters. Jefferson would hang on for their first win of the season with a 69-45 road win. Freshman forward Chelsey Raven led the way with 18 points, and 14 rebounds. Ashlyn Eyles chipped in 15 points, and Sierra Fleming added 13. Coach Woodward was very pleased with the team effort, and the amount of contributions that came from his whole roster in their first victory. "I thought we made a lot of good plays today, we had energy, and everyone was engaged on the floor and the sideline."
