Jefferson Women's Basketball Holds on for the Win in Home Opener

The Jefferson Women's basketball team held their home opener this past Sunday against Region 3 opponent Hudson Valley Community College. In front of a packed house neither team disappointed in a down to the wire contest. Hudson Valley and Jefferson traded leads early with the Lady Cannoneer's holding a 27-24 lead after the first quarter. The start of the game saw a balanced attack for Jefferson with 5 players scoring in the first quarter led by freshman guard Ashlyn Eyles with 8 early points. Hudson Valley controlled much of the 2nd and 3rd quarters holding a 5-10 point advantage throughout. With 3 minutes and 30 seconds left on the game clock Jefferson found themselves down by 10 and starting their comeback. Freshman forward Chelsey Raven made a basket cut and a layup behind an assist from Madison Besaw cutting the lead to 8. The Lady Cannoneer's strung several stops together, Alyson Crosby chipped in a layup, and Ashlyn Eyles knocked down a 3 point field goal with 2:23 left cutting the Hudson Valley deficit to 3. A 3 minute scoreless streak for the Lady Vikings allowed Jefferson to take the lead 75-74 behind two more layups, one from sophomore guard Sierra Fleming, and another from Ally Crosby. Hudson Valley would counter with a late 2 point field goal with 24 seconds left giving them a one point lead. Eyles would connect on a free throw to knot the game at 75 just seconds before Crosby would make the first of two free throws with 1.1 seconds left to give the Lady Cannoneer's their first home win and Region 3 win of the season.
