Cannoneers Gain First Win in NYC but Suffer Loss at Westchester

The Cannoneers opened the season against the Borough of Manhattan Community College in exciting fashion, winning in overtime 106-98.  The game was very fast paced throughout with BMCC getting out early, then the Cannoneers fighting back to gain a six point lead at half.  The game would have many lead changes and with the game tied with 5 seconds left, the Cannoneers would have to try and go the length of the court to get the win.  The Cannoneers succeeded and would see a last second desperation shot go in and out.  In overtime, the Cannoneers would gain control early and finish off BMCC with a 20-12 run to win the game by the final score of 106-98.  Quincy Aubertine would lead the Cannoneers with 26 points, followed by Antonio Smalls-Hansell with 21 points, and Joshua Newman would chip in with 18 points and 10 rebounds.  It was a great team effort and everyone did their part to help the Cannoneers start the season on a winning note.

On Sunday Jefferson came out flat against Westchester Community College and suffered a tough 95-74 setback.  The first half was all Westchester and they would bury the Cannonners and score 59 points on them.  In the second half, the Cannoneers would play inspired basketball and win the half 52-36, but it was not enough to overcome the large halftime deficit.  Leading the way for the Cannoneers were Antonio Smalls-Hansell with 15 points, followed by Quincy Aubertine with 14 points.  Nickson Merone would also contribute in the contest by hauling down 12 rebounds.  Next up for the Cannoneers will be 2 important Region III games next weekend on the road in the Capital district, as they face Hudson Vally and SUNY Adirondack on Friday and Saturday respectively.
