Jefferson Women's Lacrosse Start 2016 Season in Maryland

The JCC Women's Lacrosse team travelled to Maryland to face three teams from Region XX.  Their first match was held Friday afternoon at 3:00 against Harford Community College. The Lady Cannoneers got off to a slow start and trailed 7-3 at halftime.  After shaking off the cobwebs from a six hour bus ride they were able to get back on track in the second half.  JCC pumped in eight goals in the second half, with the game tying goal being scored by Lexi Smith with 2:25 left in the game.  With less than a minute left in the game Sophomore Morgan Exford rolled the crease for what seemed to be a certain goal, but an amazing save by the Harford goalie resulted in a transition that pushed the ball into the JCC zone with less than a minute left. Hartford was able to drive to the goals and scored with 13.6 seconds left on the clock.  It was a hard fought game by both teams.

In their second game of the weekend Jefferson faced reigning Region XX Champions and perennial Maryland power Anne Arundel Community College.  AACC was powered by a very strong midfield and attack and took a 9-3 lead going into the half. JCC's offense was not able to counter in the second half and fell short in the contest losing 17-7.

On the heels of two tough contests the Lady Cannoneers travelled to Frederick Maryland to face the Lady Cougars of Frederick Community College.  Once again JCC got off to a slow start in the game.  JCC trailed 8-3 at the half.  However, the ladies pulled it together and JCC was able to battle back in the second half and tied the game with under a minute left on a great crease drive goal scored by Stephanie Green.  The game went into overtime and was scoreless after the first overtime.  Late in the second overtime, Frederick was able to clear the ball over the middle resulting in a contested ground ball that sent their player off on a break away and resulted the game winning goal.  Freshmen goalkeeper Brittany Shafer was terrific in the cage all weekend, capping the three day trip with a stunning 17 save performance against Frederick.
