Jefferson Volleyball Starts Their Season with the 2013 Jefferson Invitational

The lady cannoneers started their season Saturday with a victory over Mohawk Valley Community College in the opening game of the 2013 Jefferson Invitational Tournament.  Tournament play was best 2 out of 3, in which 8 teams were divided up in to 2 pools. JCC defeated MVCC 25-8 and 25-18.  Next the ladies defeated Finger Lakes 25-18, 21-25, and 15-4. The Lady Cannoneers then lost to Corning Community College 18-25 and 19-25.  This put them second in their pool, advancing to semifinals to play Onondaga Community College.  JCC fell to the Lady Lazers with the scores of 18-25 and 19-25 to finish the day.  Corning went on to defeat Onondaga in the finals and therefore winning the tournament. 

The ladies returned Sunday to play Corning at 11:00 for their first conference match of the season.  It ended up being a 5 game 2 1/2 hour battle to the end.  Corning won the first set 25-18, but JCC showed up in the second set, coming back from a 11-22 deficit to win 27-25!  Corning took the third set 25-21 and Jefferson won the fourth set 25-18.  This sent the teams in to a deciding game 5 to 15 points.  The Lady Cannoneers started the set in the lead and kept it until the very end.  Corning served the final few points winning the match 15-9.  Co-captain Ashley Capone led the way over the weekend compiling 16 service points, 32 kills, 15 blocks and 37 digs, she was a steady force for the ladies all weekend.  Co-Captain Shelby Contryman compiled 24 service points and 96 assists.  Returning right-side hitter Kierstin Burke racked up 20 points, 29 kills, and 72 digs, she battled an ankle sprain all weekend and kept working through the pain. Stephanie Ennist added 24 service points and 21 digs in her first weekend of play in her new position of middle blocker.   Haley Riley from Lowville Academy had a great debut at the college level compiling 53 service points, 40 kills, and 49 digs.  Nikki Wormwood from Carthage also proved very consistent with 12 kills and 7 digs, Haley Zicari added 16 digs and Keysha De Jesus had 14 digs and 12 service points. 

The ladies play a tough OCC team next Wednesday, September 18th at home, come on out to support the team at 6:00!
