Jefferson Volleyball Victorious Over Onondaga!

The Lady Cannoneers had a huge victory last night over Onondaga Community College!  The sophomores were honored and they gave the crowd an exciting match to watch.  This win moved the team to 3-2 in the conference and 9-5 in the region.  The girls won in three sets:  25-21, 25-21, 26-24.  Co-captains Ashley Capone and Shelby Contryman led the way once again.  Ashley delivered 14 kills and 3 blocks while Shelby had 10 service points and 26 assists.  Haley Riley added 6 service points and 10 digs, Kierstin Burke added 5 kills and 3 digs, and Stephanie Ennist compiled 9 service points and 5 kills.  Haley Zicari finished with 2 service points, Keysha De Jesus Ortiz added 2 digs, and Nikki Wormwood had 4 digs.

The Sophomores that were honored last night were:

Co-Captain Ashley Capone:  Ashley is a Math/Science major with a concentration in Allied Health.  She plans on transferring to a four-year school to continue her education and volleyball career.  So far this season Ashley has compiled an astonishing 129 service points, 297 kills, 80 blocks, and 133 digs.  She was recently named to the Cara Bryant Memorial All-Tournament Team at the OCC Invite and was named Athlete of the Week for September 17th.  Ashley has certainly made her mark on Junior College Volleyball.  Last season she was named to the MSAC All-Conference team and compiled 315 kills, 107 blocks, and 202 service points, she was also voted our team's Most Valuable Offensive Player.  This season, Ashley has had to play defense, something a middle blocker doesn't usually do, but she has stepped up to the challenge and is so solid on both defense and offense.  Ashley is a driving force behind this team, she is our go-to hitter and opposing teams know and respect what she is capable of doing.  Ashley's passion for volleyball is un-matched, she truly loves the game. Her advice to next year's team is, "Always stay together and never make Mama mad!".

Co-Captain Shelby Contryman:  Shelby is majoring in Early Childhood here at JCC and she isn't sure if she will be transferring or staying close to home and joining the work force.   She has stepped in to our 5-1 setting position after many hours of work during the pre-season.  Shelby has already compiled 181 service points, 141 digs, and 602 assists!  She is a steady force behind this team and has made some amazing saves to give the team a spark of energy.  Shelby was named Co-Athlete of the Week for October 1st.   Shelby's advice to next year's team is, "Attend all the open gym times over the off -season because they are worth it."

Kierstin Burke:  Kierstin is majoring in Liberal Arts with a concentration in Humanities and Social Sciences and she plans on transferring to a four year school next fall.  Kierstin started out the season as a right side hitter but has recently became an outside hitter.  She has compiled 116 service points, 116 kills, and is leading the team on defense with 270 digs!  Kierstin can easily find a way to make the girls laugh but when it is game time she is always down to business.  Last year Kierstin compiled 113 kills and 173 digs and was named to the Regional All-Tournament Team, she also was voted our team's Most Improved Player.  Kierstin loves volleyball and always pushes her teammates to be successful.  Kierstin's advice to next year's team is, "In order to accomplish something, you need to believe you can.  And remember, frustration is not your friend!".

Stephanie Ennist:  Stephanie is majoring in Liberal Arts here at JCC and is undecided about her future plans at the moment, she may transfer to a four year school or join the work force.  Steph played strictly defense last season but this year started out as an outside hitter, was moved to middle blocker, and is now back to being an outside hitter!  Steph quickly adjusts to whatever role she needs to, and her teammates are very grateful for this.  So far this season she has compiled 114 service points, 35 kills, and 87 digs.  Steph is always positive and is very consistent, she can be depended upon to make a smart play to end a rally.  Steph has served 212 times this season and only has 9 errors!  Steph's advice to next year's team is, "Work hard and you will go far!".

Haley Zicari:  Haley is majoring in Criminal Justice and plans on transferring to a four year college next fall.  So far this season Haley has racked up 64 service points and 74 digs.  Haley started her volleyball career as a setter and last year she focused on defense and played some as a right side hitter, she also earned the Team Spirit Award.  This season Haley has been playing defense and has made many diving saves.  She works hard every day in practice and consistently makes great plays to give the team a boost.  She can always be depended upon to make her serves, she has served 120 times this season and only has 2 errors.  Haley's advice to next year's team is, "Always go all out for everything and just have fun!".

The team travels tonight to Tompkins-Cortland Community College for the last conference match.
