The Lady Cannoneers Snap the Onondaga Lady Lazers's 106 Game MSAC Winning Streak
On Saturday afternoon the Jefferson Women's Basketball team had more than just Sophomore night to celebrate. After a hard fought forty minute battle, the Lady Cannoneers knocked off the #8 nationally ranked Onondaga Lady Lazers. The win snapped their 106 game Mid State Athletic Conference win streak, one that dated back 8 years. Riley Luckie led the offensive charge with 17 points, while sophomore guard Marisa Clark tallied 15 points and 5 assists. The Lady Cannoneer's trailed 17-14 after a sloppy first quarter for both teams. The start of the second quarter was much like the first. Several back and forth baskets for both teams until the 3 minute and 35 second mark when a 3 point basket by Riley Luckie gave Jefferson a 27-25 lead. With one more basket, and several free throws to end the first half Jefferson took a 32-29 lead into the intermission. Sophomore forward Susie Morrow and Riley Luckie notched two early baskets, and Marisa Clark knocked down a couple free throws to stretch the Cannoneer lead to 8 early in the 3rd Quarter. Onondaga would fight back to cut the lead to 1 point with 3 minutes and change left in the third, but three quick baskets and a free throw from Susie Morrow, Amy Holland, and Riley Luckie gave Jefferson an 8 point lead going in to the fourth quarter. The closest Onondaga would get in the fourth quarter would be 3 points with one minute and fifty four seconds left when freshman guard Amy Holland would knock down a 3 point field goal from the corner while getting fouled, and then complete the four point play to stretch the lead to four! Jefferson would never look back with a layup from Kali Eyles and several free throws from Riley Luckie and Marisa Clark to knock off Onondaga 67-60!
Coach Woodward stated " Our team had incredible energy, and engagement today. They all played tremendously, and worked their tails off. Everyone contributed in some way, and that's how strong we can be as a team. I'm so happy for our sophomores, but incredibly proud of all my kids today."
