Lady Cannoneers Split this Weekend

North Country:

On Saturday the Lady Cannoneers traveled to Saranac Lake for a showdown with Region 3 foe North Country Community College. A highly anticipated contested saw North Country jump out to an early 5 point lead halfway through the first quarter. A late 3 point field goal from freshman Katelyn Flanagan, and several free throws from freshman Breanna Harrington, and sophomore Katy Nortz saw Jefferson take the lead at the end of the first quarter 18-17. With a lot of back in forth throughout the second quarter North Country took a halftime lead into the locker room up 31-28.

A quick basket from North Country started off the third quarter, Jefferson answered with a layup from freshman forward Alyson Crosby on an assist from freshman forward Chelsey Raven. A several minute scoring drought ensued for the Lady Cannoneers. North Country jumped out to an 8 point lead with several minutes left, before ending the quarter with a 12 point lead. Throughout the fourth quarter Jefferson plugged away at North Country's lead, slowly chipping away. The lead was cut down to 4 points on several occasions, the last with just 3 minutes left.  After North Country's 3 point field goal Jefferson fought to lengthen the game with a full court press, and fouls. The Lady Cannoneers fought a great deal of foul trouble, and came up short on the road with a 70-58 loss. " I thought we did a great job of fighting to keep ourselves within striking distance early. We had a lot of foul trouble early, and just couldn't fully recover. Our team is tough and they don't stop fighting, that allowed us to hang around and still have a chance at the end of the game. " Stated Coach Woodward after the road contest.

Clinton:

The Lady Cannoneer's didn't have much time to rest before they were back on the hardwood. On Sunday they matched up with Clinton Community College in Plattsburgh, NY. Their last game before the semester break, the Lady Cannoneers jumped out to an early 23-7 first quarter lead behind 10 points in the quarter from sophomore guard Sierra Fleming. Six second quarter points from freshman guard Ashlyn Eyles gave Jefferson a 38-12 lead headed into the halftime break. Sierra Fleming led the way on the day with 22 points, Eyles chipped in 11, with 8 different Lady Cannoneers scoring on the day contributing to a 62-28 victory of Clinton. After the game Coach Woodward contributed the win to his teams overall attitude, and willingness to compete. " It's never easy on the road when you have a tough, and highly anticipated game like we did yesterday. We came out today, and didn't have any let downs and we really competed on the defensive side of the ball. That allowed us to score some early baskets, and move us forward for the whole contest." Jefferson finishes their first semester with a 6-3 overall record, and a 4-2 Region 3 record. After a short winter and holiday break, they will tip off January 6th at 1 pm on the Jefferson Community College campus against Schenectady Community College.
