4-13-2021 the SUNY Jefferson Cannoneers softball team hosted the Cayuga Spartans in an afternoon doubleheader. The Spartans started the game quickly as their first two hitters would single off Cannoneer's starter Sarah Johnson. Johnson would work out of trouble by enticing a groundout and striking out two. Jefferson scored two runs in the bottom of the first to take a lead they would not relinquish. Johnson and relief pitcher Paige Kloster allowed only 3 more hits over the remainder of the game and the Cannoneer's offense put up runs in every inning en route to the 15-1 game one victory. The offense was led by Leah Briones and Marissa Valvo who each went 3 for 4. Isabella Soluri drove in 3 runs and Bailey Zicari came around to score 4 times.
The Cannoneers would take the early lead in game two by plating 4 runs in the bottom of the first inning. Cayuga would tie the score in the top of the 2nd inning aided by a Jefferson error and to some uncharacteristic base on balls issued by Cannoneer starter Georgia Barton. The Cannoneers regained the lead for good by scoring 6 more runs in the bottom half of the inning. Barton settled down and held the Spartans to 1 more run over the final 3 innings of the run ruled shortened contest. In the Cannoneers 15-5 victory the offense collected 13 hits. Sarah Johnson was 3 for 3, Riley Dowlearn was 2 for 4 with 5 runs batted in including a bases loaded triple, and Kaylee Johnson was 2 for 2 with a double and 4 runs scored.
The Cannoneers record improves to 10-4 and up next they host the Corning Red Barons on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
