Jefferson Softball Opens Season With Split Against Onondaga

The Cannoneer Softball team opens their season off with a home double header against the Onondaga Lazers. The Jefferson offense struck early with 3 straight hits to begin the game capped up with a 2 run double from Katie Call. Jefferson's defense would struggle against the elements in the third dropping a few fly balls that would not only surrender the lead, but allow Onondaga to go up 3-2. The Cannoneers would show great resilience however, and in the 4th inning Mackenzie Lane would follow up the strong Onondaga 3rd with a 2 run single to put the Cannoneers back on top. Kate Adams would drive in a big insurance run the the 6th with a bunt single to propel the Cannoneers to a 5-3 victory. Delaney Wiley would pitch a complete game allowing just 1 ER while striking out 12 batters in her collegiate debut.

Game 2 saw Jefferson 2-0 going into the second inning when Lily Gray would walk with the bases loaded to cut the lead in half. Unfortunately, the Lazers scored in all but 1 inning and the deficit became too much for the Cannoneers to overcome. Lia Canell would drive a run in the 3rd, and Kiannah Ward would hit her first homer of the year to plate 2 in the 5th as Jefferson splits the series losing game 2 by a score of 9-5.
