Cannoneers Defeat the Visiting Cornell Big Red Hockey Team 4-2

On Saturday afternoon the JCC Hockey team faced off against Cornell at Haldane Arena in Pulaski.  The much-anticipated debut of the new hockey jerseys took place and they looked great on our players. Our team has now grown to 16 players with the addition of Graduate Student Ryan Blevins and First Year Lenny Dormio coming about mid semester.

The cannoneers got off to a great start and dominated the first period, but Cornell Goaltender Anthony Rambino played great between the pipes.  JCC was able to capitalize on a nice front of the net goal by Ben Wiley on the power play; Sam Stone had an assist on the play.   Loose defensive play at the end of the period led to a Cornell goal and the first period ended with a score of 1-1. In the second period JCC Center Kyle Gionet scored on an unassisted goal less than 30 seconds into the middle frame, giving JCC a 2-1 lead.  His goal was the result of some great work by Bailey Dalin around the net.  Dalin also hit a post moments later nearly giving JCC a 3-1 lead.  The cannoneers played persistent hockey in the second period and at the 8;47 mark, Owen Newton set up Zachary Blevins for a shorthanded goal, tour 6th of the season and JCC took at 3-1 lead, and the period ended with the Cannoneers maintaining the two goal lead.

In the third period The Big Red pressed hard and were able to tighten the score with a goal by William Czech.  The Cannoneers never quit and at the seven minute mark Casey Wilson tallied with a great shot from the top of the circle, giving the Cannoneers a 4-2 lead which they were able to maintain and hold on for the win.

The win brings JCC to 4-1 overall while Cornell fell to 0-2.  Notable players for JCC were forwards Zachary Blevins who currently leads all players in UNYCHL in points with 12 Goals 9 Assists for 21 Points.  Kyle Gionet scored his 8th of the season.  Brennen Derouchie was a stalwart on defense and Drew Stone backstopped the team with 31 save and bringing his save percentage to just below .900.
